What Are Tinctures?

A tincture is an herbal extract that has been concentrated as a liquid by using glycerin, grapeseed oil, and/or coconut oil among others to pull the active ingredients (in this case CBD) to use for medicinal benefits.

Tinctures are a great way to reap the benefits of some of your favorite herbal remedies. They are easy to use and very simple to dose.

Tinctures have been used for centuries, dating as far back as 1000 AD around the same time alcohol was first distilled. The Ancient Egyptians used tinctures to soak herbs and used them for medicinal use.

The Cannon of Medicine published in 1025, covered medical topics that included the use of tinctures. It was then used to teach western medicine from the 12th to the 17th centuries.

Tinctures are widely available today and can be bought online

Some of the more common tinctures available today include

  • CBD
  • Chamomile
  • Lemon Balm
  • Nettle
  • Echinacea
  • And Feverfew

Tinctures can also be found in wellness stores and even in some grocery stores.

Benefits of Using a Tincture

Using a tincture comes with many benefits. Tinctures are one of the easiest forms to take herbal remedies. Some of the other benefits are:

Dosing - With tinctures, you can get a very specific dose as it is concentrated to make sure the active ingredients are precise. The directions on the bottle will explain how many drops to use per serving.

Easy to take - Some people have a hard time swallowing pills or capsules, tinctures are an easy way to take your favorite herbs. You can mix the herbal extract in juice, yogurt, oatmeal, soup, Jell-O, mashed potatoes, and salad dressing to name a few.

Absorption - When taking an herbal supplement through tincture form, some manufacturers instruct you to hold under the tongue for fifteen seconds. The reason behind this is due to the extract being quickly absorbed from the blood vessels under the tongue that lead into the lingual artery.

Low Calorie - Using tinctures are a great low-calorie alternative to using other forms. CBD edibles are higher calorie options that normally contain at least 100 calories per serving. Most tinctures average around 7 calories.

Discretion - Tinctures are a glass bottle with a dropper, they look like any other tincture on the market.

Easy to travel - Tinctures are easy to travel with as they are a glass bottle. They won't take up as much space as most pill bottles.

Prolonged shelf life - Tinctures have a very high shelf life and can be used for years. It is recommended to use them within 2 years, but depending on what they contain, some may last 3-5 years. It is recommended to shake before each use, as separation occurs after a few days.

These are just some of the many benefits of using a CBD tincture over other forms of delivery.

How To Use

Tinctures are very easy to use and come with many benefits. To use a tincture, fill the dropper provided in the glass bottle. The directions on the back will tell you exactly how many drops to use for the dose that is recommended.

Most manufacturers recommend holding the liquid herbal extract under the tongue for 15 seconds to make sure of maximum absorption.

With most tinctures, you will begin to feel the effects in about 15 minutes. This can vary based on the various ingredients added and the extraction method.

Benefits of Using CBD

CBD is one of the many active compounds that come from cannabis. CBD does not have the psychoactive properties that THC provides, so you will not feel a "high" after usage.

The World Health Organization has reported that "CBD exhibits no effects indicative of abuse."

Also, according to the report by the World Health Organization, CBD may have some therapeutic benefits. These benefits reported include:

  • Anxiety - Helps reduce muscular tension, restlessness, and fatigue. It also helps reduce social anxiety
  • Pain - Helps manage pain in patients with neuropathic pain
  • Depression - CBD has anti-depressant effects in a rodent model
  • Nausea - Helps suppress nausea and similar conditions in rats
  • Inflammation -  CBD showed anti-inflammatory properties multiple models

Outside of the World Health Organization report, other potential benefits of using CBD include anti-acne, helping to control seizures, neuroprotectant, and it also helps relieve symptoms associated with cancer and cancer treatments.

CBD doesn't have any major side effects that have been reported. Some of the minor side effects that people have reported are dizziness, low blood pressure, fast heartbeat, paranoia, and drowsiness.

The FDA hasn't approved CBD to use for any medical conditions to date. This is because cannabis is classified as a schedule 1 drug, making it difficult for further research to be done. As laws seem to be loosening up around CBD and its uses,  further research will be conducted.
